How to clean and store your sex toys (and make them last longer)
Share
A well-cared-for toy lasts for years and, above all, is more hygienic. These are the basic steps by material.
Before and after every use
Always clean your toy before and after using it. If it's shared, or moved from anal to vaginal use, use a new condom or wash it thoroughly in between.
How to clean by material
- Silicone, glass and metal: non-porous materials. Warm water and mild soap or a dedicated cleaner. Toys without a motor can be boiled for a few minutes (always check the manufacturer's instructions).
- TPE / TPR ("skin-like" materials): these are porous. Warm water and gentle soap, without scrubbing hard, then apply renewing powder to keep the texture.
- Toys with a motor: don't submerge them unless they're waterproof. Wipe with a damp cloth and a spray cleaner.
Drying
Dry them with a clean, lint-free towel or let them air-dry before storing. Moisture is the enemy of hygiene.
How to store them
- Each toy in its own pouch or box, so materials don't react with each other.
- In a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and heat.
- Remove the batteries if you won't use it for a long time.
Battery care
Don't leave the toy flat for months: charge it at least every 2-3 months to extend battery life.
When should you replace a toy?
If you notice cracks, breaks, stains that won't come off or a smell that doesn't go away, it's time to replace it.
